Art critic's comment

In his artistic practice, Anatoly Movlyan seamlessly blends mastery of classical painting techniques with a contemporary approach to portraying his subjects. His portrait paintings are enriched with both striking realism and profound emotional depth. The artist demonstrates a remarkable ability to convey the depth of human character through meticulously rendered details, nuanced colours, genre motifs, and, at times, unconventional compositional strategies. Each portrait conveys a narrative, which unveils the sitter’s inner world. In Ode to a Lonely Man, for example, certain humble everyday objects, such as a worn wooden stool and a plain bar of household soap, serve as quiet symbols of openness and unpretentious simplicity.
The psychological accuracy of each character is demonstrated not merely through naturalistic rendering, but equally through the painting’s distinctive colour palette and tonal composition. Movlyan’s approach to portraiture is fundamentally dialogic, fostering an ongoing conversation both with the sitter and with life itself. His artworks have been recognised with numerous international awards and prizes.
