About the artist
Lennart's breathtaking use of color is a counterpoint to his interest in the Rococo. For Grau, angels, classical still lifes and epic scenarios are the perfect models for revealing the superficial glamor of the era and transforming typical ornaments into neat displays. In reduced, abstract studies, the artist works with light and shadow, always on the lookout for innovative Trompe L'oeil techniques.
Through these moments, the artist attempts to evoke a sensation that is both seductive but at the same time contains a questionable subtext. As in Impressionism, the key task of the artist becomes the depiction of light and surroundings. An artistic movement that has always been associated with innovation, progress and critical thinking is revived in Grau's work and transformed into three-dimensional representation.
“I like to be seduced by beautiful facades that at the same time make me immediately doubt them because of their superficial aesthetics.
Lennart Grau (1981, Krefeld/Germany) completed his fine art studies as an alumnus of Prof. Leiko Ikemura at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin in 2012. The artist lives and works in Berlin.
