"The Signs of the Times." Paintings by alexey Chernigin

14.04.2024

From 11 April, RakovGallery gallery hosts an exhibition of paintings by Alexey Chernigin

The exhibition introduces artworks by Alexey Chernigin. His paintings reflect the diversity of our world and present various subjects - from significant historical and religious events to simple scenes from everyday lives of our contemporaries.

The artist offers the interpretation of historical scenes through the experiences of their participants. For example, the large pieces “We” and “Basta!”, dedicated to the turning point historical events of the twentieth century, convey the spirit of the period of Ernesto Che Guevara (1928-1967). In these multi-figured compositions, each of the characters has individuality and character. The artist empathises with the personages, proving himself as an expert in history and in human souls.

The diptych “Crucifixion” is primarily notable with its horizontal format and unusual approach to display. In fact, this piece is a triptych with the empty space between the two panels being the centrepiece. In this painting, the artist addresses religious and philosophical issues, he discards clichés and draws the viewer’s attention to the most important cultural, historical and religious aspects, which are meant to unite people, but often contribute to the opposite.

A series of paintings dedicated to female images levels out the impact of the dramatic religious and historical subjects. Gentle and romantic, these pieces invite the viewer on a summer trip to the countryside or take them for a stroll in the rain along the streets of Saint-Petersburg, and then invite you to enjoy the grace and elegance of ballet...
