The exhibition features paintings from the early period of Sergei Laushkin's work. Stylistically, these pieces, created in the late 1990s and early 2000s, differ significantly from the Stepped Rhythms series, which have captivated the artist's creative attention since 2015. However, there are internal connections between the early and new stepped artworks, revealing the metamorphoses of Sergei Laushkin's artistic method. A signature work in the exhibition is the portrait The Untitled, in which the stepped rhythms of the composition are presented in a pastel colour palette, which is characteristic of the artist's early period.
This exhibition aims to identify the starting point in the evolution of the artist's creative exploration from his early artworks to the style in which he paints today. One of the key pieces in the exhibition is The Window from the series Internal Connections. This little-known series of paintings by Sergei Laushkin, which precedes The Stepped Rhythms, emphasises the continuity between the artist's early and most recent work. The smooth outlines of objects, which are characteristic of the early period, gradually begin to acquire the geometrical rhythm and stepped quality.
The emphasis in this exhibition, however, is made on the early artworks. Unlike the paintings of subsequent series, where the shadows deepen and the artist's palette becomes darker and more contrasting, the colours of the early artworks are always bright and cheerful, striking in their openness and richness. Some of the paintings featured in the exhibition have not been exhibited for many years or have never been on display before.
